Rib Roast, X-mas 2010

I like food.

Actually, that’s not totally accurate.  I love food.  These items were cooked by either myself or my wife over the past year.  The feature image above is a rib roast I made for Christmas, cooked over about 6 hours on a grill.  The recipe comes from Adam Perry Lane’s book Serious BBQ, which is potentially the most amazing cookbook I’ve ever used; everything we’ve made from it has been fan-freaking-tastic.

The wife made the delicious and unfortunately named “sugar balls” below.  The other two items — the turkey and the rack of ribs — were both done on our smoker, were equally big hits using more APL recipes.

It was a glorious evening last night in Boston, and the wife and I took a walk around Castle Island in Southie at sunset.  There was hardly a cloud in the sky, but the sun still gave some gorgeous color as it dipped down behind the skyline in the distance.

Castle Island, if you’ve never been, is a real gem on the shore in South Boston; it rings a cove where people can sun and swim, or take a sailing lesson, or even sometimes do a little fishing.  On the north side is the entry point for larger boats coming into Boston harbor, and just across the water is Logan Airport, so the sky is dotted with planes coming and going (and at sometimes alarmingly low altitudes).  Out to the east you can see the Boston Harbor Islands and the Atlantic Ocean stretching out to nothingness.  There’s also an old Revolutionary War fort (Fort Independence) to marvel.  Go — you won’t regret it!

These pictures were some of the first I took with my Canon EOS T2i back in November, and I still enjoy some of the depth of field changes that I was able to pull out between the two cats, who were understandably as fascinated by my new toy as I was.

Fireworks at Ogunquit Beach, ME

Happy 4th of July everyone!  I spent the 4th this year (just like the past several) with my wife, brother and sister-in-law in Ogunquit, which is on the southern coast of Maine.  Ogunquit has a beautiful long beach that is perfect for gathering on a blanket to watch the fireworks.  This year’s show seemed to be at risk for cancellation as a massive storm with nickel-sized hail and 60 mile an hour winds ripped through the town and beach just a few hours before sunset, but as storms of that type often do, it left a serene night in its wake and the show went off as scheduled.  Hope your 4th was as nice!

One of my favorite places in the world is Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox.  For one glorious year I lived about 30 steps from Gate B at Fenway, which meant I was right there for the 2004 World Series (and the probably more important ALCS against the Yankees) that was so cathartic for Sox fans like myself.  This past weekend on Mother’s Day, the team allowed those at the game to come wander the warning track around the field after the game — it was, in a word, awesome.  A few of these shots are from the right field grandstand (taken about a week earlier), but most are from the field itself.
